Fast dynamical control of quantum droplets via Feshbach resonances

Jing Li, Thomás Fogarty, Thomas Busch, Andreas Ruschhaupt

    Abstract

We propose a variational shortcut-to-adiabaticity scheme for the fast dynamical control of one-dimensional quantum droplets in ultracold Bose-Bose mixtures. The control is implemented through time-dependent mean-field (MF) and beyond-mean-field (BMF) nonlinearities, which can be adjusted by tuning intra- and interspecies scattering lengths near Feshbach resonances. Using a bright-droplet variational ansatz, together with inverse engineering, we derive time-dependent interaction protocols that connect prescribed initial and target self-bound states while suppressing residual excitations. We analyze three representative settings: simultaneous control of the MF and BMF terms, control with fixed BMF nonlinearity and time-dependent MF interaction, and control with fixed MF nonlinearity and time-dependent BMF interaction. For the constrained cases, additional variational degrees of freedom are introduced to optimize the protocols while respecting the imposed restrictions. Direct numerical simulations of the extended Gross-Pitaevskii equation confirm final fidelities exceeding $0.99$ on short time scales, and show that the optimised protocols are robust against finite calibration errors of the nonlinear control strength. Our results provide a route toward fast state-to-state manipulation of self-bound quantum fluids and may be useful for controlled matter-wave engineering in ultracold mixtures.

Smooth time-dependent control of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

    Abstract

We consider protocols for control of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates where the critical role is played by the long-range anisotropic interatomic magnetic dipole-dipole interaction. The phase diagram of such a condensate has been explored theoretically and experimentally with certain values of the interatomic scattering length corresponding to superfluid and supersolid phases, where supersolidity appears as a modulation in the ground state density. Preparation of this modulated ground state is challenging, since excitations appear as a result of a finite-time evolution required to produce qualitative changes in the wavefunction density. To solve this problem we consider the time-dependent control of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate using shortcuts to adiabaticity techniques, concentrating on design of the time-dependent scattering length, a parameter of the system easily tunable by contemporary experiments. The first technique is the variational approach based on the Euler-Lagrange equations for a separable ansatz describing the evolution of the superfluid state. Secondly, we study the transition from superfluid to supersolid using a direct optimization protocol. We discuss the fidelity of the developed protocols in terms of the evolution time.

Piston control in a two-ion quantum device

Jing Li, Eugene Ya. Sherman, Andreas Ruschhaupt

    Abstract

We propose a scheme for piston control in a two-ion quantum device with motion confined to orthogonal axes. In this system, one ion plays the role of a ''classical'' piston driven by the Coulomb interaction with the other ion, whose quantum motion is controlled through modulation of its trapping potential. The stationary state is determined self-consistently, taking quantum effects into account. We identify a narrow quantum regime of the ground state connecting two broad classical regimes. We further design inverse-engineering protocols to control the motion of the ''classical'' ion. The proposed control scheme provides a useful route toward controlled piston dynamics in microscopic quantum devices.

Twist-and-turn dynamics of spin squeezing in bosonic Josephson junctions: Enhanced shortcuts-to-adiabaticity approach

Manuel Odelli, Andreas Ruschhaupt, Vladimir M. Stojanovic

    Abstract

The twist-and-turn dynamics of spin squeezing results from the interplay of the one-axis-twisting (nonlinear in the collective-spin operators) and the transverse-field turning (linear) term in the underlying Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick-type Hamiltonian, both with constant (time-independent) prefactors. Using shortcuts to adiabaticity (STA) and the recently developed enhanced version thereof (eSTA), we demonstrate here that dynamics of this type can be utilized for a fast and robust preparation of spin-squeezed states in internal bosonic Josephson junctions, i.e., condensates of cold bosonic atoms in two different internal (hyperfine) states (single-boson modes) coupled through Rabi rotations. Assuming that the initial state of this system is its ground state for a given initial value of the (time-dependent) linear coupling strength and that the nonlinear coupling strength remains constant, we set out to determine the time dependence of the linear (Rabi) coupling strength that allows for the generation of spin-squeezed states using the STA- and eSTA-based approaches. We then characterize the modified twist-and-turn dynamics of this system by evaluating the coherent spin-squeezing and number-squeezing parameters, as well as the fidelity of the target spin-squeezed states. In this way, we show that the eSTA approach allows for a particularly robust realization of strongly spin-squeezed states in this system, consistently outperforming its adiabatic and STA-based counterparts, even for systems with several hundred particles. Our method could also be employed for the generation of metrologically-useful non-Gaussian states.

High fidelity control of a many-body Tonks--Girardeau gas with an effective mean-field approach

Muhammad S. Hasan, Thomás Fogarty, Jing Li, Andreas Ruschhaupt, Thomas Busch

    Abstract

Shortcuts to adiabaticity (STA) are powerful tools that can be used to control quantum systems with high fidelity. They work particularly well for single particle and non-interacting systems which can be described exactly and which possess invariant or self-similar dynamics. However, finding an exact STA for strongly correlated many-body systems can be difficult, as their complex dynamics may not be easily described, especially for larger systems that do not possess self-similar solutions. Here, we design STAs for one-dimensional bosonic gas in the Tonks--Girardeau limit by using a mean-field approach that succinctly captures the strong interaction effects through a quintic nonlinear term in the Schrödinger equation. We show that for the case of the harmonic oscillator with a time-dependent trap frequency the mean-field approach works exactly and recovers the well-known STA from literature. To highlight the robustness of our approach we also show that it works effectively for anharmonic potentials, achieving higher fidelities than other typical control techniques.

Quantum control of classical motion: piston dynamics in a Rabi-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate

Jing Li, Eugene Ya. Sherman, Andreas Ruschhaupt

    Abstract

We explore the dynamics of a hybrid classical-quantum system consisting of a classical piston and a self-interacting pseudospin 1/2 Bose-Einstein condensate with a time-dependent Rabi coupling. We investigate the mechanical work produced by the piston moving as a result of the quantum pressure of the condensate. The time-dependent Rabi field redistributes the condensate density between the spin components and, as a result, causes a time dependent pressure acting on the piston. Correspondingly, the motion of the piston produces quantum evolution of the condensate mass- and spin density profiles. We show how by optimised design of the time-dependent direction of the Rabi field, one can control position and velocity of the piston.

Spin squeezing in internal bosonic Josephson junctions via enhanced shortcuts to adiabaticity

Manuel Odelli, Vladimir M. Stojanovic, Andreas Ruschhaupt

    Abstract

We investigate a time-efficient and robust preparation of spin-squeezed states -- a class of states of interest for quantum-enhanced metrology -- in internal bosonic Josephson junctions with a time-dependent nonlinear coupling strength between atoms in two different hyperfine states. We treat this state-preparation problem, which had previously been addressed using shortcuts to adiabaticity (STA), using the recently proposed analytical modification of this class of quantum-control protocols that became known as the enhanced STA (eSTA) method. We characterize the state-preparation process by evaluating the time dependence of the coherent spin-squeezing and number-squeezing parameters and the target-state fidelity. We show that the state-preparation times obtained using the eSTA method compare favourably to those found in previously proposed approaches. We also demonstrate that the increased robustness of the eSTA approach -- compared to its STA counterpart -- leads to additional advantages for potential experimental realizations of strongly spin-squeezed states in bosonic Josephson junctions.

Fast transport of Bose-Einstein condensates in anharmonic traps

Jing Li, Xi Chen, Andreas Ruschhaupt

    Abstract

We present a method to transport Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in anharmonic traps and in the presence of atom-atom interactions in short times without residual excitation. Using a combination of a variational approach and inverse engineering methods, we derive a set of Ermakov-like equations that take into account the coupling between the center of mass motion and the breathing mode. By an appropriate inverse engineering strategy of those equations, we then design the trap trajectory to achieve the desired boundary conditions. Numerical examples for cubic or quartic anharmonicities are provided for fast and high-fidelity transport of BECs. Potential applications are atom interferometry and quantum information processing.

Improved anharmonic trap expansion through enhanced shortcuts to adiabaticity

Chris Whitty, Anthony Kiely, Andreas Ruschhaupt

    Abstract

Shortcuts to adiabaticity (STA) have been successfully applied both theoretically and experimentally to a wide variety of quantum control tasks. In previous work the authors have developed an analytic extension to shortcuts to adiabaticity, called enhanced shortcuts to adiabaticity (eSTA), that extends STA methods to systems where STA cannot be applied directly [Phys. Rev. Research 2, 023360 (2020)]. Here we generalize this approach and construct an alternative eSTA method that takes advantage of higher order terms. We apply this eSTA method to the expansion of both a Gaussian trap and accordion lattice potential, demonstrating the improved fidelity and robustness of eSTA.

Robustness of Enhanced Shortcuts to Adiabaticity in Lattice Transport

Chris Whitty, Anthony Kiely, Andreas Ruschhaupt

    Abstract

Shortcuts to adiabaticity (STA) are a collection of quantum control techniques that achieve high fidelity outside of the adiabatic regime. Recently an extension to shortcuts to adiabaticity was proposed by the authors [Phys. Rev. Research 2, 023360 (2020)]. This new method, enhanced shortcuts to adiabaticity (eSTA), provides an extension to the original STA control functions and allows effective control of systems not amenable to STA methods. It is conjectured that eSTA schemes also enjoy an improved stability over their STA counterparts. We provide numerical evidence of this claim by applying eSTA to fast atomic transport using an optical lattice, and evaluating appropriate stability measures. We show that the eSTA schemes not only produce higher fidelities, but also remain more stable against errors than the original STA schemes.
